Nothing Left to Say by Foufinha The suggester says, "The mist and overall magical/eerie landscape makes for the perfect scenery of quite an artistic nude, that brings much emotion and demonstrates much talent both from the photographer and model." 'that ass'? You don't love any of the artistic elements, like the composition or lighting or anything

How insightful. >:I

Maybe if it were a drawing or painting, I'd appreciate the artistic element more.  But this is nude photography, something literally anyone can do provided they can afford a good camera.  So yes, I comment on the model's body, because that's the most impressive thing about the picture.  The composition is just a formulaic application of the rule of thirds, and the lighting is just a result of shooting outdoors.  No one ever makes pretentious comments on composition and lighting when looking at Playboy's photos, even though they have just as much artistic merit is most "fine art" nudes.  I don't see how this is any different.  Photography is photography.

Your initial statement wasn't all that interesting to me as it would be the same as someone seeing a photo of a bald eagle and saying "Love those wicked looking talons". Sure there are actual human beings involved here who might take offense to being made to see comments sexually objectifying them when they are giving something very personal in an attempt to bring something beautiful, emotional, and thought provoking into the world but "eagle talons" are wicked looking and I can understand the impulse to comment if not the lack of empathy that allowed you to do so. More than likely if they are allowing comments they have tough enough skins to tolerate the occasional comment of this nature.

This next comment is much more interesting.

In it you say that there is no particular artistic merit in any kind of photography. (quite a bit of what goes into film making would then also be without artistic merit as well)

To me, art tells stories that inspire thoughts, emotions, a reaction from my being. The choice of subjects, setting, posing, whether to follow the rules (like the rule of thirds you mentioned) or break them (once they understand the rules well enough, photographers are encouraged to experiment in breaking them for sometimes fantastic results) and any adjustments made to them like make-up, costume, props, altering the environment etc... these and more are all ARTISTIC choices photographers can make to tell their stories, to bring forth a mental/emotional reaction from their audience.

And yes those Playboy photos could be considered art under this definition. The difference lies in the vision and intent of the artists creating them. The type of thoughts and emotions they are trying to inspire. Playboy's photographers are constrained by a specific set of reactions their masters are attempting to evoke in the paying audience. I would suppose that could cause severe lack of originality and creativity. Sometimes strong boundaries for a project force an artist to think outside the box to remain original and creative within the rules. But I don't read Playboy so I don't know if any of their photographers have made the effort to squeeze as much as they can into those constraints or not. Here we have a photographer free to use the nude form to attempt to inspire any thought or emotion they can envision. I think any resemblance you are seeing between the two forms of expression is entirely superficial based solely on a nude female being present.

Just because you personally find it easier to admire someone who envisions a line and uses a pencil to draw it over someone who makes the effort to arrange for and capture that line in real life you have chosen to ignore the piece's ability to inspire thought and emotion in its viewer. You seem hung up on the tools used and ignoring the results.

Most of the artists who draw and paint such things find great inspiration in these pieces and would certainly not agree with you.

So the difference is in the vision, huh?  So I could fill a jar with my own piss and say that it represents the eternal struggle of the human soul, and it would be considered fine art?  Intent should not be the deciding factor in whether something is considered fine art or not.

That being said, I'm not trying to be totally dismissive of nude photography.  I still appreciated it as an art form; I just don't think it's as respectable as drawing and painting; I think it's about at the same level as anime.  Search for nude art on the Internet and you'll find a whole slew of photography from thousands of different photographers, but not a lot of drawings and paintings.  Nude photographs are a dime a dozen.  They're something that's easy to produce very quickly and in mass quantity, since their creation is instantaneous; and you don't have to worry about things like anatomy and perspective, because the camera does all that for you.  There's a lot less artistic talent and hard work involved.

Also, I never said there was no artistic merit in any kind of photography.  I said that Playboy has just as much artistic merit as any other form of nude photography.  I'm saying the only reason Playboy isn't respected as "fine art" is because the photographers didn't bother to call it such.  I wasn't denying the artistic merit of photography; I was denying the superiority of one kind of photography over another simply by virtue of the creator calling it art.

As for my original comment ("Love that ass."), people say shit like that all the time on deviations like this.  Just look at the guy three comments below me.  I think it goes without saying that if you don't want to be objectified, you shouldn't pose for nude photography.  It's just common sense.  You can't just show people an image of something that they're biologically hardwired to be sexually attracted to and say "You're not supposed to find this sexually appealing."  And no, it's not about being an immature teenager letting your hormones control you.  It's about acknowledging that something has sex appeal and not being a prude about it.

Thank you for responding to me in an intelligent, logical and reasonably polite manner. Because of this I have enjoyed our conversation and had great fun learning new things in the process of researching my response. Since large conversations on their pages often annoy the "owners" of those posts I decided to switch to a Note instead of a direct reply for my next bulky response.

See ya round. :)

Looks like she is about to dance of into the fog like a Will'O'Wisp luring the viewer towards a fruitless chase or a mysterious end...

I wonder if she is a dancer with that pose or if she was coached specifically on it? (I'm not a dancer but that is what it looks like).

If I was into such things I would get down on my knees and pray that this could be used as stock. It is the perfect image for so many kind of nature spirits. In particular with some altering of scenery this would make a decent inspiration for a piece of Horo from Spice and Wolf.

Thanks for your kind words! :) No she isn't a dancer and as she'd say of herself she isn't very good in dancing either :D

I'm sorry but I don't want my work to be used as stock images since I shoot them for myself and I see them as a finished picture that shouldn't be edited or put into another context afterwards... I'm sure there are a lot great stockphotographers out here on dA :)

Thank you for putting so many stories in my head! ^_^

Oh I understand, I actually don't do anything like that (maybe some day as a hobby... ) at this time, I was just expressing how amazingly inspiring this piece is by saying that it would be a boon to the creative juices of all the painters, sketch artists, sculptures, writers etc... round here. Not that I actually was planning to. I am currently without skill and can only admire and comment.

So thank you for giving me something wonderful to comment on. :D

P.S. I can't promise that one day years from now if I am writing a story a spirit in the mists might not dancer her way through my head but I don't think that is the type of thing you were talking about.
